Preventing and Identifying Child Sexual Abuse

Violence against children, especially sexual violence is a persistent human tragedy still very common in all communities. Thousands of girls and boys in Kerala are sexually abused in homes, play grounds, schools, public places and so called safe places. They are not safe in their homes, around their families and in their community. All though there is a considerable increase in the registration of crimes, the disposal of such cases by courts, the inadequate delay in creating child friendly courts and police stations, slow trials, inadequate victim-witness protection and lack of stringent punishment against the accused, the issue of violence against the children in India remain fragmented and grossly in adequate

 

Some activities of our Child Protection programme include:

  1. To give the students a general outlook regarding gender equality and also open a platform to discuss the issues of Child Sexual Abuse and providing awareness regarding the same.
  2. To provide Psychological and Psychiatrist support activities to sexually abused children and to children who had behavior problems through recognized hospitals and psychologist which will help the children to walk back to their normal life.
  3. Training and empowerment based trough examination including motivational sessions, which help students to understand their circumstance and inherent strength and thus empower them to make responsible choice
  4. Partnership with institution, hospital, rehabitation centres, shelter homes for rehabitation support for affected children who are sexually abused. Counseling service through systematic observation and recording of child progress and Psychotherapy to get them back to main stream of society and also to give post truma care.
  5. To identify those children who had gone through the victimization of sexual abuse and to give them support with educational and skill training and thus to make successful and contributing member of society.

Women Empowerment

Women empowerment meansempowering women with education, financial independence, employment and decision making . The women empowerment can help in reducing poverty and it can provide a better chance for next generation. The women empowerment is the key socio-economic development. There is a lot of pressures from society and family which lowers down the career ambitions of women. They need to be strong , aware and alert for their growth and development. The recent studies shows that Women are victims of crimes, rape, molestation and dowry death and trafficking.

Following are the women empowerment Jenika foundation has initiated:

  1. To educate, create, build awareness and empower women who are employed in Corporate as well as in any type of organizations to deal with gender related issues in the society including such issues at their work place.
  2. To associate with organizations of all types in order to help, assist, support, build awareness among women on issues related to gender justice and issues that affect female employees at work place and in the society.
  3. To provide services such as guidance, psychological counseling and legal support for the women to deal with issues that they face at work place, at home and in society at large.
  4. To build, establish, maintain and manage shelter homes that can be used for the needy women and their children as decided by the trust.

Referral Service for Traumatize Victims

The patterns of psychological distress and psychiatric disorder among women are different from those seen among men. Women have a higher mean level of internalizing disorders while men show a higher mean level of externalizing disorders. Research shows that women who are in or have left an abusive relationship experience higher than average level of anxiety, depression, panic attacks and post traumatic stress disorder. .

When come to psychological help , women felt anxious about having any psychological support or treatment because their abusive partner might use this against them. Women were also fearful of any kind of metal health assessment in case it went on their medical notes and resulted in them losing their children. Most women started receiving counselling on after they had left their abusive partner, as part of the process of recovery. Research suggests that psychological help for women who have experienced abuse can help to improve their well-being. In some cases, they may be referred by their doctor for a course of general counseling or if abuse has been recognized. Some cases receiving counseling was crucial in their recovery from the trauma of abuse.

  1. Psychological therapy’s like talk therapy, behavioral therapy etc will help you to develop management skills and help you to gain control over fears after a traumatic event.
  2. To enable individuals to build a warm supportive network of caring people and reduce social isolation and also to plan strategies to avoid re-traumatization.
  3. To conduct workshop for mental health professionals and counselors in techniques for dealing with psychological trauma

Support to Victims of Domestic Violence

Violence against women are increasing in the country . the most common cause for women includes dissatisfaction with the dowry and exploiting women for more of it, neglecting children, going out of home without telling husband, not making food properly and not looking after the in laws properly.

Domestic violence and abuse in India is not just a problem of the lower and middle classes. It is very prevalent even among prominent and famous people too. The signs of domestic violence are not always obvious and a lot of women don’t report that they are being abuse. Even the woman’s won family is not always supportive at such times, because of the shame and guilt that surrounds such issues. Another concern that women face is how to prove domestic violence in India.

But there is hope for women as there are strong laws against domestic violence and abuse in India. Domestic violence Indian kanoon gives a lot of power to women. And yes there are always some opportunistic women who will try to abuse the legal system by misusing the domestic violence act of India. According to the National Family Health Survey (NHFS-4) released by the Union health ministry, every third women since the age of 15, has faced domestic violence of various forms in the country.

Most of the times perpetrators of this violence have been the husbands. It is also seen that 31% married women have experienced physical, sexual, or emotional violence by the partners. The most common type of spousal violence is physical violence (27%), following by emotional violence(13%) .

Following are the Support given to the victims of domestic violence

  1. To help, support and guide women who are victims of domestic violence
  2. We also provide individual counseling and mental support to the Victims and their children so that they can start up their lives confidently.
  3. We provide shelter homes for women and children in general.
  4. We also help to provide victim compensation from the government to the effected victims of the domestic violence and sexually abuse children.

Dealing With Sexual Abuse at Work Place

The sexual harassment has become even more evident in recent years, with women showing up the courage to share their horrific stories. It is sad that women are still faced with these kind of challenges in the workplace. A modern day woman struggles to strike a balance between working and family life, often sacrificing the latter to succeed and gain status within a company and society.

Following are the Support given to the Victims of sexual abuse at work place by Jenika Foundation

  1. To educate, train and help build awareness among organizations and empower the organizations to implement gender justice programs at work places.
  2. To train, educate, create awareness among of all sort of establishments which include Private Limited, Public Limited, Government and Non-profit Organizations on women’s empowerment.
  3. To provide services such as guidance, psychological counseling and legal support for the women to deal with issues that they face at work place, at home and in society at large.
  4. Help institution to form Internal Complaints Committee.
  5. Help aggrieved women to make written complainant of sexual harassment at work place to the Internal Complaints Committee and also to forward complaint to Local Complaints Committee.

Aid for Elderly, Disabled and Mentally Challenged Person

The common psychological problems that most of the elderly people are feeling of powerlessness, feeling of inferiority, depression, isolation. The sad truth is that violence lurk within the intimate space of our homes, from those to whom we are closest. The abuse elders report are common across social classes and cities. The elderly people depends economically on their children. But children find it hard to accept the fact that here are times when parents want to feel the love that they once shared with them. There are times when parents just want to relax and want their children to reciprocate their care. There are laws specially made for senior citizen. The legal rights of people with disabilities are guaranteed. They cannot be treated differently. These type of people suffers from poor health, lower education achievements, limited economic opportunities. There are initiatives to improve the lives of people with disabilities.

Support provided by Jenika foundation

  1. To provide legal support, aid, and other assistance to disabled persons, mentally ill persons and also to children suffering from Autism and for elderly persons.
  2. We help them by providing Rehabilitation centre’s .
  3. We provide Knowledge related skill technique programme development as a method of rehabilitation program for disabled and mentally challenged persons

The organization currently focuses on domestic violence victims. Usually women hesitate to report abuses- physical, sexual, emotional, verbal, economical against them in public. Our program supports victims of domestic violence and sexual abuse victims through legal aid, counselling, intervention, financial assistance, vocational training, and social rehabilitation. Any women who faces any violence either domestic or sexual violence can approach JENIKA for getting a helping hand in times of her extreme distress.

Legal advocacy and support for victims

Legal advocacy includes assisting victims in their legal battle.. Whenever a case is referred in JENIKA, we initiate crisis interventions through its counsellors and social workers for immediate help in genuine and most needy cases. JENIKA and its team members will be accompanying the victim throughout their battle to secure justice to them. Team JENIKA ensure that justice is not denied to victim due to lack of money or support.

Psychological support for victims and family

We provide individual counselling and mental support to the victim and their children so that they can start up their lives confidently. Many of the victims are facing mental and physical trauma and many of them are at the verge of committing suicide. They need continuous emotional support and counselling support to cope up with the situations. JENIKA provides counselling and psychological treatment to the victims and their children.

Financial support for victims

Many of our victims are from very poor economic conditions. Many of them are unable to go for work due to health conditions. Here JENIKA provides financial support for the selected victims as per their immediate need. With a minimum amount in their hand they will be confident and courageous to walk to the future with their children.

Vocational Training support for victims

JENIKA has taken a step to support survivors of child sexual abuse and domestic violence by providing education and vocational training. Victims are provided vocational training in tailoring, bag- making, embroidery, arts and craft including jewellery making and paper pen making.

JENIKA plans to sell these products by conducting exhibitions and sale fests.
